So you’ve started thinking your marriage may be heading toward divorce. For many, just the thought of this alone can be overwhelming. Take a deep breath. If this is really the direction you want to take, it may not be easy, but it can be made EASIER.
So where to start?
You need to start with good record keeping. If you’re already navigating through the process, there’s never a point that’s too late to start.
- Start taking notes on your phone. This is a great strategy for lists and reminders.
- If your spouse has access to your phone and you don’t feel comfortable keeping notes here, create a new email address he or she is unaware of for record storage. Gmail or yahoo are free options.
- Create a Dropbox account. This way you can store a large number of documents at one time. This way you can easily share access to your documents with your attorney as well.
- Make sure you have access to all your accounts. Make a list and obtain access to everything from the account with the cable company to retirement accounts.
Good record keeping may be a pain, but the more organized you are, the more success you will have throughout the process.
